Launching Science: Science Opportunities Provided by NASA's Constellation System

In January 2004, NASA was once given a brand new coverage path often called the imaginative and prescient for area Exploration. That plan, now renamed the USA house Exploration coverage, referred to as for sending human and robot missions to the Moon, Mars, and past. In 2005, NASA defined how one can behavior the 1st steps in enforcing this coverage and commenced the advance of a brand new human-carrying spacecraft often called Orion, the lunar lander referred to as Altair, and the release automobiles Ares I and Ares V.

SPACE VEHICLE NAVIGATION AND TRACKING R. R. Newton showed [4] that the orbital parameters of an artificial planet of the Sun can be found by Doppler methods with sufficient accuracy for practical navigation (orbit corrections). For a sample orbit he found that averaging over a period of one-half day, the orbital elements DOPPLER EFFECT OF ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES 33 can be found with an accuracy of 10~5. It was estimated that ionospheric refraction effects would double the error. This application supposes either that the crew of an artificial planet would monitor transmissions from Earth in order to navigate or that Earth-based receivers would monitor a spaceborne transmitter.

The formation of the planets was supposed to result from the rapid cooling of solar material and its condensation into particles which would gradually coalesce into solid bodies. However, it later became known that eruptive prominences on the Sun are caused by radiation pressure and that these forces are inadequate for triggering eruptions of the magnitude hypothesized in this theory. Sir James Jeans [3] modified the theory in order to remove this objection. He concluded, from a detailed study of the ejection process, that material of the outer surface of the Sun would have been drawn from the tip of the tidal protuberance in a long jet or filament.

For the purpose of tracking it is therefore preferred to compare Doppler data from 2 or 3 stations and for several passes in order to arrive at a very accurate determination or orbit parameters [7]. Such a system requires the accurate determination of time of closest approach and the range to the satellite at closest approach. Both these data can be accurately reduced using the highly redundant information contained in the complete curve. This has been discussed in Sec. III. I t will give more data than actually needed to solve for the orbital parameters, which makes for very high accuracy.
