1. 27 A steep line of bluffs that reaches heights of two hundred feet defines the Mississippi Delta. 29 During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, it was a rural region but not an isolated one because on or near its perimeter sat major towns and small cities, including Little Rock and Pine Bluff, Arkansas; Memphis, Tennessee; and Jackson, Mississippi. 31 A few independent black churches existed during the antebellum era, but most slaves worshipped under the watchful eye of the master and white preacher or, more privately, by themselves in hush harbors and secret meeting places.

Yet at the same time it invited a focus on the daily experience of social and religious change in the Delta that ultimately helped to shine a light on hidden or little glimpsed acts of community formation and statements of theological novelty. As a result, After Redemption is not a straightforward story of ‘‘change over time’’ that opens in 1875 and marches steadily forward to 1915. Instead, it is arranged as a series of overlapping historical investigations into how Delta blacks struggled day by day with the shifting meanings of religion and freedom as they experienced the growth of Jim Crow.

In 1876, Reverend Andrew Williams of Little Rock based his decision about where to start a new church on a discussion with a group of black railroad workers. ] It was already a proven coal field, surrounded by rich agricultural and horticultural lands. 32 The railroad industry played a more important role in religious lives of Delta blacks beginning in the mid-1880s, when it developed a dense network of trains, tracks, and terminals that reshaped local transportation, politics, and economics. The pace of railroad growth accelerated at this time due to several factors.
