While the extent of these primary energy sources is usually large, there are a number of technological, economic, environmental, and labor constraints on converting them into useful energy. For example, many remaining domestic supplies of petroleum and natural gas are in difficult-to-access locations. Some are in environmentally sensitive areas. And renewable energy is unevenly distributed across the United States; in some cases, regions with abundant renewable potential are physically distant from demand centers.
