Thus, in speaking, I bear witness to my relation to the infinite, to my relation to something beyond myself, which is paradoxically within me, as an other within me 32 LESLIE MACAVOY which has ruptured my autonomy and solipsistic integrity. This “other within” resembles the intimation of the infinite implied by the presence of the idea of the infinite, and here Levinas appears to be elaborating the ethical implications and significance of the presence of this idea. The words that I speak to the Other do more than give the meaning which they explicitly carry.

The court is the place of judgment where individuals who have been accused must face their accusers and must justify themselves before the judge, jury, or both.
